Topic: Our Future

2017

In 2017, we launched a series of initiatives to talk about the airport's growth and the impact of our operations to ensure that our long-range Master Plan addresses the concerns and priorities of residents in the communities around Toronto Pearson.

Public workshops

Toronto Pearson hosted five public workshops across the region in the communities to the north, south, east and west of the airport.

More than 500 residents, including elected officials and members of the Residents’ Reference Panel, formed for the airport growth and noise fairness conversation, attended and provided feedback on our growth plans and ideas for mitigating the impacts of airport operations.

Topics covered included:

  • New transit options for the airport and region
  • Noise mitigation programs
  • Information about our operations
  • Our commitment to the environment

Regional survey

In addition to public workshops, we conducted a region-wide survey between April 24 and July 31, 2017. Survey topics included Pearson’s operations, the impact of noise on surrounding communities and the potential for growth at the airport.

Survey respondents were recruited in two ways:

  • Closed-call: paper surveys sent to more than 20,000 homes resulted in 1,229 responses
  • Open-call: online survey advertised in print and on social media resulted in 1,364 responses

Altogether, we received feedback from 2,593 residents across the region. The open-call sample was more geographically concentrated than the closed-call sample. Of respondents from the open-call sample, 35% are from neighbourhoods bordering the airport, compared to 10% of respondents from the closed-call sample.
