Safe Movement of People, Planes and Passengers
From vehicles and planes to people, it’s important that we ensure safe movement throughout our airport to reduce safety risks and prevent injuries.
Airside Vehicle Operator’s Permit (AVOP)
AVOPs certify airport employees who can drive airside, which includes driving on our apron, runway and taxiway areas. It’s important that we follow proper driving procedures to keep those around us and ourselves safe. Here are the top five AVOP infractions that occur and can easily be avoided:
- Unsafe movement of vehicle
- Failure to wear seatbelt
- Driving 1-9 km/h above the speed limit
- Failure to yield right of way to aircraft or marshalling crew
- Failure to use vehicle corridor

Lock then Walk
Unauthorized movement of passengers and employees between security areas has become a serious concern. These incidents could impact and inconvenience our airlines and passengers by causing flight delays. Here’s how you can help prevent incidents from happening:
- Scan your RAIC every time it is required. Press the intercom if you are unsure.
- Always monitor the door and wait for it to lock behind you to prevent unauthorized entry of passengers or other employees that do not have a need and right.
- Do your part in promoting a culture of security vigilance and reporting.
Unattended Items (baggage)
Unattended items are a security issue. It is the responsibility of all personnel operating at Toronto Pearson to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings to keep the airport safe and secure. Report all unattended baggage.
Use the security number, 416-776-7381 to call in unattended bags or items as well as any other security related concerns.
Tread Carefully
Injuries that occur on moving devices such as escalators and moving walkways are the main concern in the terminals. To prevent an accident, avoid bringing large personal items on the moving devices such as walkers, wheelchairs, and strollers. You should also avoid trying to carry large amounts of baggage or trying to bring baggage carts onto the units. Instead, use one of our elevators.
Slip and Falls
Slips and falls are another common cause for injury. To help prevent this from happening, wear weather appropriate footwear, use crosswalks curbside, and call any indoor spills or outdoor areas that need to be treated (e.g. icy, slippery surfaces, snow removal) into operations.
Human Trafficking – Recognize the Signs
Educate yourself on the ways to recognize signs of sexual exploitation and human trafficking in Canada. Understand behavioural signs that might indicate an exploited person, and how to get help without putting the concerned individual in harm’s way.
