Building for the Future: Terminal 1 Washroom Renovation Project

Since January 2024, Pearson has been transforming Terminal 1 washrooms to elevate the passenger experience and support a future-ready airport.

This ongoing renovation will deliver major upgrades to more than 39 washroom banks—including nursing and family rooms—focused on improved accessibility, cleanliness, and modern design. We’re excited to share the progress and what’s still to come as this multi-phase project continues.

Construction began early 2024, and to date we have completed 11 washroom banks which include family rooms and nursing rooms. The work is being completed in phases to minimize disruption. The full transformation is expected to be completed in 2027.

Exciting New Upgrades

Here’s what to expect from the upgraded T1 washrooms:

  • A Modern Look –Terrazzo floors, quartz wall finishes, modern mirrors with integrated lighting, upgraded lavatories, and sleek glass panels featuring striking Canadian landscape photography—shot and curated by local photographers—will come together in a cohesive, contemporary design.
  • Enhanced Accessibility – Our new washrooms will meet the highest accessibility standards, with features such as power-operated doors, accessible fixture heights and placements—including sinks with knee clearance—and emergency call buttons, among many others.
  • Sustainability – Water bottle filling stations and energy-efficient LED lighting will support our environmental goals and reduce waste.
  • Smart Washroom Technology – IoT (Internet of Things) enabled systems will monitor consumables and schedule maintenance, allowing custodial teams to respond quickly and efficiently. This minimizes passenger disruption, improves flow, and enhances overall service.

At the core of this renovation is our commitment to delivering a seamless and positive experience for everyone who passes through Pearson.

It's just one of the many ways we’re putting the joy back into travel.
