Passenger traffic at the airport has grown by greater than 6% in 2017. By the mid-2030s, passenger traffic numbers are anticipated to be about 85 million annually, with aviation passenger demand across southern Ontario forecasted to reach 90 million annually by 2043.
This growth requires significant investment and support from the government, but will bring great opportunity for our region and all of Canada.
Advantages of a mega hub airport
As international demand for air travel continues to increase, we are on the way to becoming one of the world’s next top tier international airports, providing air connectivity to as much as 80% of the world’s economies.
The Growing Canada with a Mega Hub Airport report (PDF, 2.8 MB) outlines the economic advantages of mega hub airports around the world and recommends steps the Government of Canada should take to allow Pearson Airport to become the world’s next mega hub airport, so we can support air travel as it continues to grow.
Working with regional airports
Southern Ontario is fortunate to have many airports to serve aviation demand. We need to plan now for growth in order to take advantage of the economic benefits for the province. Pearson has partnered with Southern Ontario airports to form the Southern Ontario Airport Network (SOAN). The purpose of SOAN is to talk about how airports will work together to meet future aviation demand.
